News Snapshot: Every Monday through Friday, News Snapshot features a newsworthy and provocative photo from The New York Times, along with the basic set of questions answered by journalists when relaying the news-- who, what, where, when, why and how. K-12 Resources: An extensive list of links to quality Language Arts Resources.

Breakthroughs in Teaching Reading: Do you find it difficult to teach reading to some students? This website explores the different reading styles students have and what you can do to reach them. (1-4)

Centers: "How to do Centers without being a ditto queen." 50 different things you can have your students do with their spelling words. Also has an abundance of centers relating to Language Arts. (K-2)

Word Walls: A list of activities to use in conjunction with your word wall. All activities were written by classroom teachers. (K-2)

100 Remedial Reading and Phonics Worksheets: This web site offers lots more than just really good worksheets. Tampareads.com is full of reading support activities and worksheets designed for beginning readers (K-4) and older students who never quite mastered the reading basics.

Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site: This is a collection of reviews of great books for kids, ideas of ways to use them in the classroom and collections of books and activities about particular subjects, curriculum areas, themes and professional topics. (PK-9)

Teacher Views: This site is written by K-8 teachers who describe favorite books and related classroom activities.

Charlotte's Web: This website was created by a second grade class. Includes students' work, Charlotte's Web links, and teacher resources for Charlotte's Web. (1-3)

Kids Korner and Toddler Tales: This site has online books and tales for kids. It has been endorsed as a safe place for kids on the Internet. (PK-6)

Spatial Concepts: Geared toward Kindergarten and First Grade, this site helps teach children spatial concepts (such as: beside, over, under, big, bigger, biggest, etc.) using pictures on the computer. (K-1)

Big Dog's Grammar: Have a grammar question? This is the place to go. This bare bones approach to English grammar is designed as a quick review with interactive online exercises that actually make grammar fun. (6-12)

Fun With Words: This site deals with plays-on-words such as anagrams, palindromes, spoonerisms, pangrams, oxymorons, mnemonics, word etymology, tongue- twisters, and cockney rhyming slang. Each term is defined and illustrated with many examples. It's fun for any classroom. (3-12)

Greek Mythology: Greek mythology just doesn't get any better than at this colorful, interactive site! Read about the feats of Jason and Hercules or follow the adventures of Odysseus. An encyclopedia provides information about Greek mythology. There are also lesson plans and teaching tips. (6-9+)

Sounds of English: Do you have any ESL students that would benefit from extra help in making the actual sounds that spoken English requires? This website focuses on the actual sounds and on making the distinctions between similar sounds. There are many examples, activities and exercises, many of which illustrate the use of technology to aid non-native English language students. (1-12)

Teaching Spelling: Three articles that cover research-based instructional practices for teaching spelling to LD children and strategies for assisting poor spellers.

Reading Comprehension Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities: Research on reading comprehension in students with LD with the goal of enhancing current classroom practices and identifying avenues for future research.

Teaching Expressive Writing to Students with Learning Disabilities: This article shows how special education researchers have developed new methods for teaching an array of writing techniques to children with learning disabilities.

Project LITT: Project LITT was a research project that focused on the use of technology to improve the reading skills of students with learning disabilities. Their website is a searchable site of the hypermedia-based children storybook software currently available.

A Guide to Learning Disabilities for the ESL Teacher: This paper is a basic primer on learning disabilities. It describes classroom behaviors associated with several common learning problems and offers practical suggestions for working more profitably with these students.

Language Arts Lesson Plan Ideas: Search a collection of language arts lesson ideas geared for upper elementary grades including spelling and vocabulary.(4-6)

Story Arts/Storytelling Activities and Lesson Plans: Storytelling is a great way to encourage speaking skills. Here is a site that provides many great activity ideas. (K-6+)

SCORE CyberGuides: CyberGuides are web-based guides designed to supplement instruction in core works of literature, and are intended for the one computer classroom. Each guide has 4-5 student activities that require the use of the WWW and lead to a product related to the study of a work of literature, an author or a literature-based theme. (K-12)

Reading Workshop: Online tutorials in reading comprehension strategies and free practice sheets for use with your students. (PK-6)

Book Raps: This Australian website offers students an excellent opportunity to discuss books with other children around the world via email. Books for future Book Raps are listed. (1-12)

Absolutely Whootie - Stories to Grow By: A collection of multicultural folktales from around the world that teach specific values. A set of questions after each story prompt the reader to think about the deeper meanings of the story. A lesson plan outline is available and the site includes games, new stories each month, and student illustration submissions. (K-6)

Clifford Interactive Storybooks: Clifford stories read aloud in a natural voice. Students choose a word to complete a sentence and the word is used in the story. Each story reflects a specific phonemic awareness or phonics concept and is accompanied by a fun activity that helps students develop and practice skills. (K-2)

English Grammar 101: Highly interactive grammar site designed for students, teachers, or anyone who wants to learn. Online tests provide "immediate feedback" and can be set up to send results to both student and teacher. Use this site to reinforce lessons or as the primary vehicle to propel your students forward. (6+)

Vocabulary.com: This site is designed for teachers and students who want to enhance vocabulary mastery. Visitors can earn a diploma at VOCAB U. Teachers can use these exercises to enrich classroom curriculum and to help prepare for the SSAT, PSAT, GED, SAT and ACT. (4-12)

Spelling Test: Participate in an online spelling test. The test is based on the 50 most commonly misspelled words in the English language. (3-9)

Netsurflearning English Course: A great resource for EFL and ESL teachers. Ten levels of difficulty, each level featuring 100 interactive work sheets that provide a variety of materials from the Web that reinforce grammar, comprehension, reading for pleasure, and writing. (K-12)

Fluency Through Fables: Fables accompanied by comprehension questions, discussion ideas and more. This is useful as a teacher centered activity in front of the class, especially for teaching ESL to adults. (3-4+)

Daily Buzzword: A new word and definition is presented each day. A sentence with the word used in context is also offered. Leveled Picture Books: The Leveled Books database is a list of over 1100 picture books commonly found in schools. Enter a specific title, author, or grade level. The computer will provide the reading level and reading recovery level of that book. (K-8)

The Book Hive: A guide to children's books for kids through 12 years old provided by the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, this site has hundreds of book reviews in different reading levels and interest areas. Users can search for books by author, title, reading level, interest area, number of pages, and illustrator. (K-6)

An Animated History of Books: Learn about books and communication from early cave paintings to the books of the future through this narrated, animated history. Be sure to read the notes for each section or visit the low-tech section to see the overall timeline and the information in text format. (3+)

FunBrain.com - Grammar Gorillas: An interactive game in which students must identify parts of speech in sentences. There is a beginner level (nouns and verbs only) and an advanced level (all parts of speech). (4-8)

FunBrain.com - Word Detective Word Search Game: A custom seek-and-find word search game. Students give FunBrain a list of words that it then hides in the puzzle. Students can select a level and whether they want to play against FunBrain or if they want the puzzle to be printed out so they can play it away from the computer. Students can also choose to play FunBrain created puzzles focused around popular books.(Site includes a worksheet) (K-6)

FunBrain.com - SpellaRoo: An interactive game in which the students must click on the word that is spelled wrong. There is a beginner and an advanced level. (K-6)

Spywatch: A reading comprehension activity in the form of a story about suspects in a case of international espionage in 1942 wartime Britain. Activities range from descriptive words, observational skills and dialogue format. (3-6)
